Politicos Hail Amtrak Infrastructure Growth

STAMFORD, CT-With congested highways as perhaps the chief impediment to future economic growth in the region, politicians are hailing the inauguration of Amtrak's Acela Express high-speed train service here as a means of reducing traffic woes.

STAMFORD, CT-Amtrak launched the expansion of its Acela Express high-speed train service here yesterday,Sunday, April 29. Among the politicians who voiced their support of the new service were Mayor Dan Malloy, Connecticut Director of Transportation Harry Harris and US Rep. Christopher Shays. Acela Express, a high-speed train with the capability of traveling up to 150 miles per hour, will now make six stops here weekdays and four stops weekends.

“Amtrak’s new Acela Express stop in Stamford will help reduce traffic congestion, and provide faster, more efficient service to Fairfield County’s rail passengers,” said Shays. “High-speed rail can increase transportation capacity at a fraction of the cost of building new highways and will go a long way toward alleviating the increasing delays of air travel by shifting short- haul passengers to the rails.”

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is currently making major improvements to the Stamford train station, with the support of Amtrak and Metro North. Completion of the work on the $95 million project, which will make the station more modern, is expected in the next two years.
