Chirstopher Doozan, planning consultant for Lyon, says the parcel on the east side of Milford Road is currently known as Canfield Farm, and is occupied by an old farmhouse. He says Kojaian wants to build a 114,000-sf shopping center on the 48-acre site, most likely anchored by a Kroger grocery store.

"I think they have Kroger tentatively lined up to occupy that space. I don't know whether final agreements have been inked yet," Doozan says.

The vacant 78-acre property on the west side of Milford Road will be turned into 560,000-sf of retail and restaurant space in 13 buildings, Doozan adds, along with a gasoline station and a 40,000-sf hotel.

"They're going through the planned development review process for both properties. They will schedule a public hearing at the May 7 planning commission meeting. Most likely the hearing will be held June 11," Doozan tells GlobeSt.com.

The applicants will have to get approval from the road commission of Oakland County, the county drain commission and other government bodies. From there, the planning commission will give its recommendation on the preliminary plan to the township board of trustees, which will take the final action.

Nobody stood up at the first introduction and said it will be a terrible development, Doozan says. However, the plans do have opposition.

"The plans don't fit well with the ideas of creating a Downtown in New Hudson, to the south," he says. "Traffic is the other major issue. Milford Road is the main artery for the people who work and live out there. The I-96 access is their main means of access."

Kojaian currently has purchase options on the sites. Company officials did not return phone calls about the property.
