$110 Mil in Retail Projects Proposed

LYON TOWNSHIP, MI-The area could see a huge traffic build-up at the I-96 exit thanks to the westward population shift away from Detroit. The Kojaian Cos. wants to put more than 700,000-sf of retail space on 125 acres there.

LYON TOWNSHIP, MI-The Kojaian Cos. of Bloomfield Hills has submitted plans to build two large retail developments at the Milford Road exit ramp of I-96. The highway has become a vital link for the western movement of people and commercial development from the Detroit metropolitan area. The company wants to build more than 700,000 sf of retail space on 125 acres, for more than $110 million.

Chirstopher Doozan, planning consultant for Lyon, says the parcel on the east side of Milford Road is currently known as Canfield Farm, and is occupied by an old farmhouse. He says Kojaian wants to build a 114,000-sf shopping center on the 48-acre site, most likely anchored by a Kroger grocery store.

“I think they have Kroger tentatively lined up to occupy that space. I don’t know whether final agreements have been inked yet,” Doozan says.
