The planned 28,000 sq m Sheffield store will be on the site of a former Yorkshire Electricity depot in the city's Parkway district. And the Southampton store - providing 28,650 sq m - is planned for the site of the former Calor Gas and Glen Dimplex factories on the Millbrook Trading Estate.

Planning applications for both stores have been lodged with the local authorities but, because of their size, the applications are likely to be called in by the department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions.

At the same time Ikea has put in a planning application for a 130,000 sq m distribution centre in the Hampton area of Peterborough. On completion in 2003 the warehouse will be Ikea's biggest UK distribution facility. It has existing warehouses in Thrapston, Northamptonshire and Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

In November 2000, the Scottish Executive approved Ikea's application for a store at Glasgow's Braehead shopping centre, and in March 2001 an application was made for a Cardiff store. Ikea currently trades from 10 UK branches, and it plans to reach 20 within the next 10 years, and then to add another 10.
