IKEA Bids for Two More UK Stores

LONDON - Swedish furniture giant Ikea has secured two more UK sites, in Sheffield and Southampton, as part of its strategy of tripling its UK chain to 30 stores.

LONDON – Swedish furniture giant Ikea has secured two more UK sites, in Sheffield and Southampton, as part of its strategy of tripling its UK chain to 30 stores. And to service the growing number of stores, a massive new distribution centre is to be created in Peterborough.

The planned 28,000 sq m Sheffield store will be on the site of a former Yorkshire Electricity depot in the city’s Parkway district. And the Southampton store – providing 28,650 sq m – is planned for the site of the former Calor Gas and Glen Dimplex factories on the Millbrook Trading Estate.

Planning applications for both stores have been lodged with the local authorities but, because of their size, the applications are likely to be called in by the department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions.
