Region's Population Center Moves Northwest

DETROIT-The 2000 census confirms a migration of Detroiters. The theoretical center of the seven-county region now is near 8 Mile Road and Stahelin. The expectation is commercial development is soon to follow.

DETROIT-With the release of Census 2000 results, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments has calculated the Detroit area’s new population center. The theoretical center of the seven-county region, which has an estimated population of 4,833,493, moved about a half-mile north and a half-mile west into the city of Southfield. The center is now located near 8 Mile Road and Stahelin.

This continues the region’s longtime trend of expanding northwest, a geographic necessity of being bounded by water and a foreign border to the southeast, say SEMCOG officials.
