GranTree, which once operated two stores in the Spokane area, left the local market in 1991 and eventually filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. The new owners plan three stores in the region within the next 12 months according to a company spokesman. After those stores are established, GranTree plans to expand into the Tri-Cities, WA, and Coeur d' Alene, ID markets.

GranTree, which previously offered furniture on a rent-to-own arrangement, now sells new and used consumer electronics, mattresses and furniture. Its present owners, Portland-based Value City, Inc. operates five stores in the greater Portland area. The company also serves as a consignment retailer, selling used furniture from companies that have accommodated extended stay clients.
