Frank Harris, of City-based agencyFrank Harris & Co, which completed the sale said 'The penthouse is one ofthe largest properties in the Barbican and the new owner will have one ofthe finest views in Europe.'

The property provides 3,508 sq ft of livingspace and 818 sq ft of terraces, with amenities including a 37ft conservatoryand access to a south facing roof terrace. An acre of landscaped garden isalso available to residents.

Built in 1963, the Barbican has performed consistently welleven in times of recession. Until recently studio flats were available from£100,000 ($140,000) and three bedroom apartments going for around £500,000 ($700,000) althoughprices have moved rapidly since increased leisure and retail facilities weredeveloped in nearby Smithfield.

The present occupier David Lonsdale, a barrister with offices close by, isplanning to move into a smaller apartment but will be remaining in theBarbican. He said, 'It is ideally situated for my chambers and there areplenty of restaurants, cinemas, theatres and bars on my doorstep.'
