Locals and Park Place Push For Casino Gaming

MONTICELLO, NY-Local politicians and business interests believe a court decision that shifts regulatory approval power from Governor Pataki to the State Legislature over Indian casinos is not a fatal blow to those who want to bring gaming to the Catskills.

MONTICELLO, NY-Area politicians and business leaders are gearing up to demonstrate last month’s court decision that shifts regulatory approval power from Governor George Pataki to the State Legislature is a setback is not a fatal blow to those trying to bring Indian casino gaming to the Catskills. While Park Place officials, those who would open the casino, would not reveal its strategy in light of the court ruling, Thompson Supervisor Anthony Cellini revealed that recently “Park Place spent all day in Albany meeting with state legislators and the governor’s office.”

State Supreme Court Justice Joseph Teresi ruled that the governor does not have the authority to enter into gaming compacts with Indian tribes. The judge stated in his ruling in the case Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce v. Pataki that the State Legislature must grant final approval to any Indian casino applications. Given the history of the State Legislature’s failed attempts to approve casino gaming, opponents of casino gaming have termed the court ruling a major victory.

Commenting on the court ruling’s impact on Indian casino gaming in the Catskills, Supervisor Cellini says, “I see this as a bump in the road. We will have casino gaming; it is just a question of when.”
