With a strong pre-opening sales campaign, the volume-driven merchandiser serving Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia says it has garnered as customers more than 10,000 membership accounts and 13,000 cardholders, or some 20% of the island's population.

PriceSmart currently operates 19 membership-shopping warehouses in the Central American and Caribbean region, including Panama (4), Costa Rica (3), Dominican Republic (3), Guatemala (2), El Salvador (2), Honduras (2), Trinidad & Tobago (1), Aruba (1) and in the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas)(1).

The Company plans to open two additional membership-shopping warehouses within the month. They include PriceSmart's first warehouse in the Philippines (in Quezon City), where membership sales also have been strong, and its third warehouse in Guatemala. PriceSmart also has acquired the rights for a second warehouse in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain, and also licenses five warehouses in China and one warehouse in Saipan, Micronesia.

In April, PriceSmart announced it is teaming with Payless ShoeSource to open 10 Payless ShoeSource stores adjacent to PriceSmart locations in Central America and the Caribbean. Original plans called for opening all the locations by the end of the year, but after a test site that was more successful than expected, plans are to open all 10 locations by August.
