''Hiawatha Davis Jr. was not only committed to the citizens of Denver, he was committed to our youth and provided opportunities for them to thrive and prosper,'' says Mayor Wellington Webb. ''It is a fitting tribute to rename a recreation center after someone who has given so much to the community and the district he represented. Through the Hiawatha Davis Jr. Recreation Center, his spirit will live on.''
The center expanded to 39,074 sf from 31,503 sf. It now has an elevated running track, a 1,000-sf multi-purpose room, a pool observation room, expanded locker rooms, more restrooms and more windows.
