Dole Relocating Refrigerated Container Facility

SAN DIEGO-Dole Fresh Fruit Co. says it is moving its West Coast container ship business to the Port of San Diego. The move, to take place in September 2002, will create the port's first refrigerated container operation.

SAN DIEGO-Dole Fresh Fruit Co., the world’s largest producer of fresh fruit and vegetables, has signed a 20-year lease with the San Diego Unified Port District for space at its 10th Avenue Marine Terminal near Downtown.

Dole will pay $1.6 million a year in rent, plus dock fees, storage fees and other costs. The Dole deal will generate an annual income of $2.3 million for the port. In return, the port will build a $23.6 million refrigerated facility, in which Dole will employee 132 full-time workers–85 for truck drivers and 33 for longshoremen.
