Mega-Church Breaks Ground On Mega-Building

TROY, MI-Unconventional methods, with slick videos and rock music, draws worshippers in droves to non-denominational Kensington Community Church. The growing number of worshippers requires another 72,000 sf.

TROY, MI-Kensington Community Church broke ground on a 72,000-sf, three-story educational training center today on the church’s 40-acre campus here. The 10-year-old non-denominational church has been attracting members in record numbers, growing from 40 people to an average weekly attendance of over 4,000, says Karl Nilsson of the church.

Recent Easter crowds exceeded 9,000 worshippers. Soon after moving into a 1,500-seat auditorium in February 1999, overflow crowds forced Kensington to offer four identical services per weekend.

To meet the growth, church leaders launched a fund-raising campaign this spring that netted $12.7 million for expansion. Despite an uncertain economy, the congregation’s enthusiastic response exceeded the campaign’s goal of $10 million.
