An area between the downtown Sheraton Hotel and the Foss Waterway is rumored to be the most realistic option. The World Trade Center Tacoma, a "franchise" with similar locations around the world, is seeking rent-free space in exchange for having is "World Trade Center" sign prominently placed on the side of a building.

Udbye, chosen as executive director by the trade center board's search committee for his ability to work with both private and public sectors, is expected to be the key negotiator in any deal.

Developers of the Foss Waterway are expected begin plans for a complex south of South 15th Street later this year.
