Green says the acquisition came quite sudden, from a call from the company. The deal was finalized in late April, he says.

"It was totally unsolicited," he tells GlobeSt.com. "They develop real estate solutions and handle the locations of products, and we provide consulting services. We're now going to be the company's professional services arm."

He says Location-Net has carved out a niche of specialty retailing, with smaller box stores and chains. The Green Group wanted to join that niche, he adds.

The headquarters of the new company will be in Sausalito. Other offices are in Madison, WI; Boulder, CO; and Troy. Green says he's moving to San Francisco to move into the corporate office. As part owner, he will become senior vice president of professional services. Tom Bernier will run the Troy office.

"I think San Francisco is absolutely gorgeous, but I was out there this weekend, and I got sticker shock. It's beyond high; the housing is priced twice what we pay here in the Detroit area," Green says. "This is a very good deal for me, it's time to broaden my horizons. I've been doing this for 16 years; now I'm looking forward to a different side of the same coin."

Green promises to return to the Troy area office often. His leaving is not a sign of low confidence in Detroit, Green adds.

"I think our Troy office will now grow substantially; it will be the company's second largest. And with our low cost of living, it will be easier to recruit people to work here," he says.
