Hudson Tribal Casino Proposal Rejected

HUDSON, WI-Three tribes have challenged the governor's veto authority, stalling a casino 30 miles east of the Twin Cities in Federal court. Gov. Scott McCallum is skeptical of gambling's role in "meaningful economic development.

HUDSON, WI-Gov. Scott McCallum rejected a proposed tribal casino at a dog track this week, arguing his state had enough legalized gambling already. The rejection came in the form of a letter to James McDivitt, the deputy assistant secretary of Indian affairs for the US Interior Department.

In his letter, McCallum says Wisconsin now has 17 casinos, a total of 22 separate sites where electronic games of chance are operated and in excess of 16,000 electronic games of chance in operation statewide.

“I remain convinced that meaningful economic development–for the tribes, the region and all the state’s citizens–is not accomplished by the expansion of gambling,” McCallum says.
