UPDATE: County Staff Backs Trust as Poinciana Master Developer

MIAMI-A pending agreement would give the Miami-Dade Empowerment Trust the authority to negotiate all sales or leases at the 30-acre industrial park.

MIAMI-The Miami-Dade Empowerment Trust Inc. is receiving solid support in its bid to develop the 30-acre Poinciana Industrial Center. As the site’s master developer, the nonprofit economic development group is about to tackle a project that many once considered a linchpin to an economic rebirth in a Miami neighborhood stung hard by the effects of the city’s 1980 riots.

In backing the economic development group, Miami-Dade County Manager Steve Shiver also is reaffirming an administrative order issued in 1998 that terminated New Century Development Corp. Inc. as the site’s original master developer.

Members of the Miami-Dade County Commission decide next Tuesday whether to approve the economic development group as the site’s master developer. If the commission approves the deal, the economic development group would have sole authority to lease or sell parcels within the industrial park under the supervision of the county Office of Community and Economic Development.
