'Tunbridge Wells suffers from a real shortage of decent quality offices,' said Alan Browne of agent Lambert Smith Hampton, 'and when BBC decided to move into the town from Chatham it took all three floors available in Mount Pleasant.' The corporation has let its surplus accommodation to Reliance Mutual, one of Tunbridge Wells's biggest employers, on a lease expiring 2011 with breaks at the fourth and fifth year and a six month rent free period. A rent of less than £15 per sq ft was agreed.
Having sold the freehold of its 10,640 sq ft former Chatham headquarters to Kent Reliance Building Society, BBC Radio Kent has acquired a district office of 860 sq ft from Barclays Bank at nearby Sun Pier Chambers at £9,500 pa for a lease until 2013 with a break after seven years.
Lambert Smith Hampton acted for the BBC in both instances and jointly in Tunbridge Wells with Bracketts. Barton Rix advised Reliance Mutual and Watson Day represented Barclays.
