According to Tim Althof, vice president of investor relations for the company, 125 out of the 4,000 employees worldwide will be laid off. Fifty of those cuts will be in this state with some coming from each of the company's facilities here--n Townsend, Sudbury and the headquarters in Groton. In addition a distribution center in Sudbury will be closed down.
"Due to new technologies and efficiencies, we no longer need that capacity," Althof tells GlobeSt.com. "The employee reductions are related to economic pressure. We are a public company and we need to stay strong."
Althof emphasizes that the company will continue to maintain a large operation in Sudbury despite the closing. The company is also consolidating its manufacturing plant in Ogden, Utah. This past September, NEBS closed facilities in this state and in Virginia and cut 45 jobs.
