The Northwest Maritime Center got a jump-start from the Camilla Chandler Family Foundation to build the new center on a dock once occupied by the Thomas Oil Company. The $8 million project has evolved considerably since its initial look 10 years ago and organizers now have collected approximately $2.5 million in campaign contributions.

Plans for the Northwest Maritime Center include a museum, moorage for visiting "tall ships," classrooms and meeting areas. Other donations have come from the Wooden Boat Foundation, a popular local group that sponsors an annual wooden boat festival.
