Published reports indicate the proposal still requires approval of the Miami-Dade County Commission, which oversees the 21-member, nonprofit board that also supervises the operation of Jackson Memorial Hospital, the city's primary public health facility.

Neither officials at the nonprofit health trust nor HCA were available for comment.

News of the proposed acquisition follows an announcement in December last year that HCA agreed to divest some of its holdings in response to a federal administrative settlement agreement, according to published shareholder's reports. The company agreed to a settlement following negotiations with the federal Office of the Inspector General over alleged irregular billing practices.

Pending final approvals, the health trust would take control of a hospital that primarily serves south Miami-Dade.
