The university board of regents is looking at one large project already underway, two recently approved projects and more on the drawing board, says Kara Gavin, a Health System spokeswoman. A $96-million life sciences building is currently being built on Palmer Drive. It will be a 230,000-sf facility consisting of six floors and a mechanical penthouse. It is one of a complex of buildings proposed as the Palmer Drive Development.
The facility is designed to accommodate the newly created Life Sciences Institute, whose purpose is to enhance the education and research in the life sciences at the university.
A new building adjacent to the Life Sciences Institute Building -- the Commons Building -- will have an auditorium, meeting rooms and a food court, and will be a place for students and faculty to gather. Science Instruction Center, an L-shaped building primarily dedicated to undergraduate students, which will be built adjacent to the institute.
The regents recently approved two buildings: a 178,000-sf east Ann Arbor surgery center and associated clinics, located at Earhart and Plymouth roads, for $75 million; and a 400,000-sf, $180-million biomedical science research building across from the Power Center for the Performing Arts.
Projects that are still in the planning stages, and not yet presented to the regents, include:
· A Depression Center, where students can study and research depression.
· A Cardiovascular Center.
Also, the Women's Hospital and the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital facilitieswill be replaced, and the 15-year-old W.K. Kellogg Eye Center will expand because of extreme growth. Gavin says the money will be raised by a donations from alumni, corporations and others, and also from the capital derived from the health system'soperation.
"We are pleased to invest in new facilities both to meet market demand for our ambulatory and inpatient clinical services and to provide the best possible environment for our faculty, staff, and students," Gilbert S. Omenn, M.D., CEO of the University of Michigan Health System and executive vice president of the University of Michigan, tells GlobeSt.com.
