Landmark Steam Stack's Future in Doubt

SEATTLE-The stack, constructed in 1908 in downtown Seattle's Pioneer Square, is approximately one foot off its centerline as a result of the Feb. 28 earthquake. Officials fear what could happen if another quake hit.

SEATTLE-The Pioneer Square Preservation Board will consider the future of the landmark Seattle Steam Company’s stack that sits in the middle of a historic district damaged by the February 28th earthquake.

The stack, constructed in 1908, is now approximately one foot off its centerline and officials fear what could happen if another quake hit. While the main steam plant did not sustain damage in the quake, a Seattle engineer said the 85-foot stack would not have lasted another 15 minutes during the recent shaker.
