WOODBRIDGE, NJ-Continuing a statewide trend of space vacated by bankrupt retailers being snapped up because they are ultimately solid retail locations, ShopRite Supermarkets has leased the 91,000-sf former Caldor space at St. Georges Crossing. ShopRite is moving from its existing 47,000-sf space at the same center, and expects to open early next year.

Matthew Harding of Levin Management Corp., North Plainfield, NJ, the property's managing and leasing agent, arranged the latest lease. Besides ShopRite, OfficeMax and PETsMART anchor the 317,621-sf retail property. Other tenants include Taco Ball Bertucci's, Funcoland and EyeDr.

Levin Management has also launched a major retrofit of the property in conjunction with ShopRite's expansion. The program, just underway, includes a façade upgrade, parking lot resurfacing and new lighting and landscaping.

“The property has always benefitted from a high-traffic location,” says Harding of the center, which is located at the intersection of Routes 1, 9 and 35. “The expanded ShopRite and the renovations will strengthen its position in the market.”
