ST. PAUL, MN-Growing demand for housing, combined with limited sewer capacity and other development constraints, has produced a very tight supply of land in the TwinCities — at least in the short term. Meanwhile, in the long term, there appears to be a20-year-supply of land to accommodate forecasted growth, according to a Metropolitan Council review of local comprehensive plans that is nearly completed.

Those are the findings of the just-released Urban Land Supply Study-2001. The conclusions are generalized for the region based on a study of five fast-growingcommunities in the seven-county metro area, including Lakeville, Maple Grove, Plymouth, Shakopee and Woodbury, who together are forecasted to account formore than 20% of the region’s growth in households to 2020.
