NYC Files Bid for 2012 Olympics Today, Development Outlined

NEW YORK CITY-One of several US cities competing to host the 2012 Olympics, NYC2012 submitted its proposal to the US Olympic committee today, Friday, June 1. The plans outline monumental development of new infrastructure and facilities.

NEW YORK CITY-Christopher Glaisek, director of Facilities Planning, shares with GlobeSt.com some insight into NYC2012′s ambitious plan to transform the metropolitan area into an Olympic host city. The official bid was submitted to the US Olympic Committee today, Friday, June 1. The biggest and most critical elements of the plan are infrastructure and facilities development, and of course the financing to make the development a reality.

Glaisek says the facilities locations have been dubbed “the X” as they cross from Northern Manhattan to Staten Island and North Jersey to Brooklyn. “We propose dedicated ferries to transport the athletes and officials only to and from the Olympic sites,” he explains. The development of the new ferry docks would be primarily on the East River, and many he says would be left as a “high-speed ferry system.”

NYC2012 hopes this and other elements will be a “revitalization catalyst” for the East River. “The East River was boating dependent, therefore predominantly industrial,” he says. “We propose to create a linear park system that will set the tone to make the area desirable for residential development.”
