It's the second major deal involving Anschutz that has been announced this month. Last week, a group that includes him and media mogul Rupert Murdoch said it had reach an agreement with community groups to clear the way for a $1-billion mixed-used redevelopment project surrounding Downtown's Staples Center.

The centerpiece of the new Carson complex will be a $34-million, 20,000-seat stadium for the Galaxy, LA's professional soccer team that currently plays in Pasadena's Rose Bowl. . A $15-million, 8,000-seat tennis stadium and several smaller facilities will surround it for cycling, baseball, track and other sports.

The project was unanimously approved by the California State University Board of Trustees. The Anschutz group has said in the past that it would also like to build stadiums for other soccer teams it owns in Denver, Chicago and Washington, D.C.

Anschutz hopes to begin construction within a few months. It would take about 15 months to complete, a company official says.
