The entertainment giant is headquartered in Burbank, an LA suburb. It trimmed about 3,000 workers from its payroll earlier this year through a voluntary separation program, says Disney spokesman John Dreyer.
The company says that the number of visitors to its theme parks in Southern California and Florida has dropped recently, in lockstep with the softening economy. The business slowdown also has hurt advertising revenue at its ABC television network.
Spokesman Dreyer won't say where the 1,000 lay-offs will be made. But Wall Street analysts believe the bulk will come at its Disneyland and new California Adventure theme parks in Southern California, and at its sprawling Walt Disney World in Orlando.Areas that may be targeted for smaller cuts include its animation operations, where profits have been falling, and its network news division.
