Protests Halt Grand Prix Land Deal

DETROIT-The State Fair on Eight Mile Road in Detroit is the subject of controversy surrounding plans for racetracks and questionable land sales. Championship Auto Racing Teams events on Belle Isle are up in the air.

DETROIT-A grass-roots group fighting plans for a racetrack and outdoor amphitheater at the State Fair Grounds has picketed there in response to the latest attempt by State Fairground Director John Hertel to bring auto racing there. Hertel proposed a plan last week at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Leadership Policy Conference on Mackinac Island to bring the Detroit Grand Prix, currently held on Belle Isle, to the fairgrounds.

Hertel says the race shouldn’t be too much of a bother, because it would only appear once a year. The Championship Auto Racing Teams contract for Belle Isle runs out this year, and the event is in danger of leaving the state unless the island is fixed up more for the race.

Attorney’s for ICARE, the group formed around the fairgrounds in opposition against car racing there, and other plaintiffs have already won a ruling from Wayne County Circuit judge, who says Detroit zoning law applies to the fairgrounds and prohibits auto racing.They believe this ruling also prevents a Grand Prix race.
