It took the title from Breckenridge in Summit County, CO, which recorded 1.44 million visits during the 1999-2000 season. Both Vail and Breckenridge are owned by Vail Resorts, which will be releasing its official numbers in its next quarterly report. Experts, however, contend, Vail is certain to regain the No. 1 slot.

The Colorado Ski County released partial figures on the destination ski resorts, which showed 11.5 million skier visits in the 2000-2001 ski season.

That's a 5.8% increase from the 11.5 million-ski visits form the previous season. It was the best since the 11.9 million skier visits in the 1997-1998 season.

Colorado ski resorts had been hammered because of poor snow early in the seasons, as well as Y2K fears.
