Port Buys Rights to Hotel Project

SAN DIEGO-Ending a contentious issue, developer Doug Manchester has sold his right to build a hotel at the former Campbell Industries shipyards back to the Port District for $5 million.

SAN DIEGO-The Port District is purchasing developer Doug Manchester’s right to build a hotel at the former Campbell Industries shipyards for $5 million. Port officials allocated $3.5 million and will pay out another $1.5 million later to buy the rights, because they hope to open the proposed project near the San Diego Convention Center up to offers from other developers for a hotel of up to 1,200 rooms.

Manchester has had an option on the project since 1999. But the partnership became tense Manchester proved unable to attract financing. He filed a lawsuit against the port last month over another hotel project, the proposed Spinnaker Hotel, slated to be near the Campbell site.
