The property, known as Updown Court, is set in 90 acres with an ornamental lake and tropical gardens. There are stables that, according to one builder working on the site, 'are good enough for people to live in,' tennis courts with underground heating, a marble-lined shooting gallery and two bowling alleys.

Designed by Arizona-based architect, John B Scholz, Updown Court was originally earmarked as the new residence of Hollywood stars Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, although their interest is thought to have waned.

Scholz's office would not confirm the new purchaser's identity, merely stating that the new owner will be using the property for entertaining foreign heads of state and diplomats as well as a private residence. The house, with its close proximity to Ascot race course, is thought to be ideally suited for Sheikh Mohammed.Other amenities include 24 bathrooms, 30 lavatories, squash courts and a 30 seat banqueting hall. One of the bedrooms has an en suite swimming pool.

The new owner's neighbours include Brian May, guitarist with rock group Queen, and actor Brian Blessed.
