Most of the software company's development team--about 40 engineers--works in Austin, Rick Cortese, Evoke's president, tells GlobeSt.com. It has a smaller development site in Boulder, CO. "We've been gradually expanding over the course of the past 12 months," Cortese says. "The Austin engineering and the help desk for customer support have outgrown their existing facility so we're moving to bigger space."

Cortese says the staffing growth is moving apace with the demand for its product, software that companies use to profile their customers. Founded in 1996, Evoke has been in Austin for about 4-1/2 years, Cortese says. It had rounded up $25 million in fifth-round funding in late 2000.

Evoke is moving into Riata's Building 7, which was vacated by Janus Corp. when it shutdown a call center. Greg Johnston of Austin-based Colliers Oxford Commercial represented Evoke in the deal and Jay Lamy of the Staubach Co.'s Austin office acted on Janus' behalf.

The brokers agree that the Evoke lease is sizable for sublease space these days. Lamy says there's still about 230,000 sf of sublease space in Riata Corporate Park. The northwest submarket has been hard hit by the technology downturn. In the latest sublease figures, 65% of the open space is in northwest Austin.

Riata, a development on property formerly owned by Dallas-based Texas Instruments, has attracted several tech companies. Tenants include Pervasive Software Inc. and NetSolve Inc.
