The San Pasqual Battlefield Volunteer Association hopes to add 10 acres to the 50-acre site along state Route 78 near the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

The association, which administers the battleground, hopes to enlist the help of the state Parks and Recreation Department in buying the land from the San Pasqual Union School District. The district is moving the school located on the site and its 400 student to a larger location this fall.

However, the district controls only two of the 10 acres and leases the bulk of the property from the city of San Diego.

The park memorializes an 1846 battle between a U.S. Army unit under Gen. Stephen Kearny and Mexican Californios led by Gen. Andres Pico. It includes a museum, monument, amphitheater and a trail overlooking the battlefield.
