Symcox Pushing Mixed-Use South Congress Project

AUSTIN-Symcox Development is working on plans for a mixed-use project on 6.34 acres at the intersection of South Congress and Alpine Street. Details are being worked out, but the strategy is to build multifamily, office and retail space.

AUSTIN-Symcox Development is planning a mixed-use project on South Congress Avenue just north of Ben White Boulevard. The property is 6.34 acres of raw land at the intersection of South Congress and Alpine Street, just north of a post office. The first 200 feet back from the street would be four-story buildings with retail and office on the first floor and condominiums on the other three floors, according to Sarah Crocker, a development consultant working on the project. The multifamily units would be behind the commercial development units, she tells GlobeSt.com. The specifics of the project, being developed by Jay Symcox, have not been determined.

The project could bring a greater mix of retail and a multifamily component to that part of South Congress. The site offers quick access to Ben White for travel east and west and to Downtown on Congress.

The project is seeking a zoning change for mixed-use commercial and high-density multifamily. It has been approved by the Austin Planning Commission and has gone through the first city council hearing. The second and third hearings are set for July 19.
