DETROIT-The planning commission recently heard a request by the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit to purchase city-owned property bounded by Broadway, John R., Farmer and Grand River roads for a new facility. The former Detroit YMCA on Witherell Street was torn down to accommodate the new Comerica Park stadium for the Detroit Tigers.

The proposal consists of the construction of a 100,000-sf, five-level YMCA facility on 1.4 acres of land currently developed as a city-owned surface parking lot and occupied by the Broadway People Mover station.

The new facility would house the organization’s programs, a child care facility and outdoor play area, a medical evaluation and physical rehabilitation clinic, 15,000-sf of street level retail, a 202-space parking structure, a fitness center, a 200-seat gymnasium and a 200-seat arts and humanities performance center.
