Despite neighborhood opposition, the new coffee shop is to open on Newport Avenue at Bacon Street in Ocean Beach. A group of neighbors has been fighting the move since May, fearing the loss of the small-town character and the effect on locally owned businesses. The area used to be known has a counter-culture haven in the 1960s.

Opposition leaders have won the support of Charles Roberts, chairman of the Ocean Beach Planning Board. The planning board wrote a letter to Starbucks asking the corporation not to come to Ocean Beach.

The Ocean Beach Town Council hasn't yet taken a position on the Starbucks issue.
