Student Design Program Comes to Stapleton

DENVER-The 21st Summer Student Program sponsored by San Francisco-based EDAW comes here to help determine the best place for a light rail station at the former Stapleton International Airport, as well as design it.

DENVER-Twenty-two undergraduate and graduate students from around the world have come to the former Stapleton International Airport to help determine the best place for a light rail station and its design. They also will help determine the best way to preserve nearby prairie grass.

The students are participating in the 21st Summer Student Program sponsored by EDAW. EDAW is a San Francisco-based environmental planning, landscape architecture, urban design and economic development firm.

The SSP internship program was started by landscape architect Herb Schaal in 1980, but this is the first time it has been in Denver. The program costs $120,000 and EDAW foots about half the bill, with donations coming from groups such as Forest City, developer of Stapleton, and the Regional Transportation District.
