The development area is bounded by Mack Avenue, the Fisher Freeway Service Drive, Beaubien Avenue and Woodward Avenue.
The project already has multifamily density. New developments include BrushPark Manor Paradise Valley, a 113-unit senior apartment facility opening in September; Hospice of Michigan; Winder St. Bed and Breakfast; and Woodward Place, a 373-unit new townhouse development.
The city is still working at buying abandoned homes and commercial businesses on the property.
Many residents attending the hearing say they are frightened of the historic homes being torn down, and of being displaced for the new developments.
The matter was taken under advisement by the commission.
