NEW YORK CITY-A two-stage, national design competition is being held to find an architect for a planned expansion of the Queens Museum of Art, founded in 1972. The current museum is housed in the New York City Building, the only surviving structure from both the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs. Successful competitors will capitalize on the open space of the building’s southern half and the dramatic opportunities afforded by the historic site.

The expansion of the building will effectively double the museum’s size from 45,000 sf to approximately 100,000 sf. The city hopes that the development of this free-span central space will allow the museum to become a player in the fast-paced contemporary art world. The space must be readily adaptable for any art medium as well as a variety of audiences and programming.
