San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, Second District, spoke at Friday's groundbreaking of the new community within the master-planned Rancho San Diego area.

"Completion of La Vida Real will fulfill the master plan for the Rancho San Diego community that was first drawn in 1978," says Jacob. "Senior housing was envisioned as a part of the community's core services … we're pleased to see the start of construction."

Michael Grust, president of San Diego-based Senior Resource Group, says the project "is positioned to provide quality senior lifestyles for those who do not want to sever their ties in the San Diego area, yet who feel the need to move to an environment that will give them a range of living and care options."

The new community will be a full-service retirement residence, offering 208 independent-living apartments and 84 assisted-living apartments. The community will also include a secure Alzheimer's/dementia care component offering 50 private and semi-private suites, specially designed for the cognitively impaired.

The project is located on an 11-acre site on the southwest corner of Via Rancho San Diego and Brabham Street. Total development cost of the property is estimated at $40 million. Senior Resource Group is the developer of the project and will manage and operate the new community when it is completed. Completion is expected to take 16 months.

Senior Resource Group is a 13-year-old company that develops and operates independent living, assisted living and dementia care communities in California, Oregon, Arizona and Nebraska.
