A parking lot, helipad and vacant field will be excavated before construction begins on a four-story medical building.
The expansion will add about 130,000 sf to a 210,000-sf structure. It will double the size of the emergency department, add 32 beds to the hospital, add two operating rooms and augment the radiology department.
The hospital serves fast-growing Douglas County.
''Douglas County is literally exploding, from form 61,411 residents in 1990 to a projected 201,980 by 2004,'' says Gary Irish, CEO for Littleton Adventist Hospital. ''This expansion will help us meet the escalating health needs of our community.''
