The projects include a $30.6 million bioengineering research building and $68 million cancer center. McCarthy has started construction on the four-story, 83,000-sf Powell-Focht Bioengineering Building.
The building on a four-acre site is designed to house facilities for both public and private foundations conducting research in the life sciences bioengineering sector. The project includes 63,000 sf of laboratory space; a 5,000-sf subterranean vivarium; 7,000 sf of office space; and 8,000 sf of public space and a student-learning center.
Targeted for completion in September 2002, McCarthy is acceleratingthe owner's schedule by six weeks.
"To meet this faster time frame, we are expediting structural concrete and steel work, and concurrently installing exterior finishes to allow for a more timely start of the final interior phases," says McCarthy Project Director Rob Ragland.
McCarthy is also serving as construction manager/general contractor for the 262,000-sf UCSD Cancer Center. The firm is scheduled to begin construction on the fast-track project in January with completion targeted forNovember 2003.
