Developer Wins Contract to Build UC Labs

SAN DIEGO-A builder has been awarded two contracts to construct laboratory facilities at the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla.

SAN DIEGO-McCarthy Building Companies Inc. has been awarded two contracts to construct laboratory facilities at the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla.

The projects include a $30.6 million bioengineering research building and $68 million cancer center. McCarthy has started construction on the four-story, 83,000-sf Powell-Focht Bioengineering Building.

The building on a four-acre site is designed to house facilities for both public and private foundations conducting research in the life sciences bioengineering sector. The project includes 63,000 sf of laboratory space; a 5,000-sf subterranean vivarium; 7,000 sf of office space; and 8,000 sf of public space and a student-learning center.
