City Considering Options For Hotel

DENVER-The City Council is considering several alternatives to get the planned $220-million, 1,100-room Hyatt Hotel across from the Colorado Convention Center back on track. The city is facing the untenable position of starting construction of the $268-million Colorado Convention Center expansion, without having the hotel, which would be built by Denver developers Bruce and Seth Berger.

Voters in November 1999 approved a bond issue to double the size of the Colorado Convention Center, with the promise that a hotel would be built nearby.

But the Bergers have been unable to go to the financial markets for financing because the Hotel Employees and Restaurants Employees Local 14 is unhappy that Hyatt won’t agree to be completely neutral while it tries to recruit workers to its union.
