The retail center, located in the Uptown area of Minneapolis on the corner of Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street, has doubled the amount of office space last year by converting 10,000 sf of retail to office and adding that to the 9,000 sf of office space already in the center.

The center, once mostly specialty retail and upscale restaurants, now also has quick service restaurants and service retail shops. One new restaurant will be Chef Tengo's Sushi Tango restaurant, which will open in mid-October.

The conversion reflects the growing demand for office space in the Uptown area, according to management officials with Calhoun Square."Calhoun Square has always been part of the nationwide trend toward creating urban lifestyle centers--a kind of new town center where people gather to shop, work and be entertained--all within close proximity to where they live," says Greg Hibbs, director of leasing.

The plan calls for converting what has primarily been retail space on the center's second floor to a mix of service retail, such as dentists, salons, alternative health care, sports medicine and offices for professionals. As a result of the changes, most of the shops on the second floor will move to the 75,000-sf first floor and some have opted to move out of the center or close altogether. Among those moving are Uptown Art and Eyedeals.

Construction will begin in late September or early October and is expected to be completed by early next year.
