Mirador, a financial services company that operates the Web Site HomeSpan.com, said the building at 900 St. James Street is being renovated and will be ready for occupancy in about six months. The building was constructed in 1902.

Temporarily, Mirador's headquarters are located at 112 Clay Street.

HomeSpan.com is an Internet portal for consumers and real estate agents. The company also plans to expand mortgage-lending services through the Web Site.

When the Walker Building is renovated, Mirador will be based there, but the first floor of the building will be devoted to the history of Maggie Walker, for whom the building is named.

Walker, the company says, was the first woman in the U.S. to receive a bank charter. She created the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank for the Independent Order of St. Luke, a fraternal burial society established in 1867 in Baltimore. Walker also presided over the Richmond Council of Colored Women.
