The commission voted 6-1 Tuesday to allow the new name, which is on several signs around the mall and will soon be on a new sign overlooking Interstate 15.

The mall is most on city-owned land, and the lease allows the city to regulate fundamental changes to the property that would affect its value, according to a city staff report.

Westfield America Inc. is changing the names of its seven malls in the county to include "Westfield Shoppingtown."

The city's design review board in March required that Westfield retain the North County Fair name when the mall applied for permission to build its new freeway sign. Westfield appealed that decision to the Planning Commission.
