The newly released Draft 2001 Regional Transportation Plan focuses on transportation but also projects the Bay Area's population and employment growth, regional changes, and commuter trends.
The plan proposes to use 90% of the $82 billion to maintain existing transportation structures and begin new or expansion projects throughout the nine Bay Area counties. This would include improving 18,000 miles of local streets and roads, as well as operating the transit systems.
The remaining $7.7 billion would go toward road and transit projects recommended by county congestion management agencies and transportation improvement projects.
MTC is in the process of researching other major transit projects to include in the plan, such as extensions to San Jose and the Oakland International Airport.
