New stores are planned in Thornton, Aurora and Colorado Springs.

Krispy Kreme, based in Winston-Salem, NC, opened its first Colorado Store in March in Lone Tree, near the Park Meadows regional mall. The store, operated by local franchisee Glazed Investment LLC, had customers standing in line for up to two hours for the doughnuts. Since then, customers lines have thinned down, but there still often are 15 to 20 minute waits to fill an order.

First-week sales hit $369,000, breaking the record for a new store.

Its next 4,200-sf store will be in the Thorncreek Crossing shopping center in Thornton, north of Denver. It is scheduled to open in December. The second store will open at the end of the year at East Mississippi Avenue and Chambers Road in the Aurora Plaza. Glazed Investment submitted plans to Colorado Springs to build a store at Chelton Road and Platte Avenue. That store is scheduled to open in January.

One thing that will make doughnut-lover eyes glaze over -- each of the new stores will be able to produce 200 dozen doughnuts each hour.
